We officially welcomed our 20th chapter member today – Heather McManus of Artistry Interiors LLC. Now we’re striving for 25!

Our speaker today was Robin Wolfe of Sunrise Title. Robin gave a quick summary of her background and history with Title Insurance:

After graduating college Robin went to Paralegal School and went on to work for a number of legal firms before receiving her Title Insurance License in 1996. She worked from home as a title insurance provider for a while and then joined Sunrise Title – taking her accounts with her. Along with Robin, the staff at Sunrise Title have years of experience in Title Insurance in both NJ and PA.

Robin talked about the NJ state requirement for Continuing Education credits to maintain her license. Her last one was a very “exciting” session on fraud. Robin told a couple of illuminating stories from the session revolving around fraudulent issues at closings:

Double payment – the sellers of the property take the check, scan it into their account via a smartphone and then return to the closing requesting a wire transfer because they need the money immediately.

Cancelling payment – the buyers take possession of the house and then cancel the check before its cashed.

To help alleviate these types of situations Robin says that she now always checks and double-checks her client’s ID’s at any closing.

At the end of her presentation Robin touched on the complexity of commercial closings (time consuming and definitely needs an attorney) and the interesting take on reverse mortgages (having to explain technical and legal issues to senior citizens!).

The meeting wrapped up with our commercials and the passing of the tip jar.
